Frequently asked questions - Travel information

Distortion of announcements can occur for a variety of reasons, such as unfavourable wind conditions or equipment malfunction. If you suspect the distortion you experienced was caused by faulty equipment, we would appreciate you reporting the details by calling 131 500.
If CityRail staff need to deal with an unexpected service delay or safety issue, this takes precedence over making announcements.
We constantly review our customer information systems to incorporate new technology and initiatives.

Yes. Transit Officers have the right to confiscate concession cards that are blank, incomplete, being misused or breaching any of the card’s conditions. Proof of identity may also be required. |
| |
School passes are only for point-to-point journeys using the most direct transport route between your place of residence and school. You are not entitled to break your journey. If you do, then you will have to purchase a valid ticket for that journey.
Free school passes are not available for travel to sports activities or school excursions outside the destinations nominated on the pass.
Please visit the Student Rail Pass page for a full description of conditions of usage.

Consuming food and drink, except for alcohol, is permitted on CityRail trains and stations. However to keep our trains and stations clean, we ask that you take your rubbish with you or dispose of it in bins, if provided.

Customers (and staff) are not allowed to smoke on CityRail trains or in any enclosed place on RailCorp premises including counter areas, underground stations, travel centres, under platform awnings, the main concourse area at Central Station and other public access areas.
You are permitted to smoke at the end of any platform, provided there is no awning or cover and it is not an enclosed station. Fines apply for persons smoking in prohibited areas. Transit Officers are not required to provide warnings prior to issuing a penalty notice for this offence.
CityRail aims to protect the health and safety of its employees and customers. The Smoke Free Environment Act 2000 requires CityRail to provide a smoke free environment in enclosed places for our customers and staff. |
| |
Bicycles are permitted on trains free of charge on the weekend and in off-peak periods. However, if you travel between 6.00am and 9.00am or between 3.30pm and 7.30pm on weekdays, you must purchase a child ticket for the bicycle as well as a ticket for yourself.
This applies to both standard and folding bicycles as well as those that have had wheels or other parts removed.
When you are travelling with a bicycle, please make sure it does not block doors and passageways used by CityRail staff and customers.
For customers with disabilities, motorised scooters are allowed on trains. |
| |
No. It is an offence to ride a bicycle, skateboard, rollerskates or scooter on a CityRail station.
This activity can be a safety risk to other customers as well as to those participating in the activity. Fines apply. |
| |
No. We do not allow pets to travel on our trains. However, exceptions are made for trained and registered assistance dogs accompanying visually or hearing impaired persons or any person with a disability, assistance dogs in training, or police and security dogs when on duty.

Travel with CityRail must always be taken by the most direct route.
CityRail has an extensive and complex network covering suburban Sydney and extending to the Hunter, Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands and South Coast regions. Because of this, there are instances where there can be more than one route of travel available between an origin and a destination station.
For details of these approved routes of travel, please refer to the CityRail Passenger Fares and Coaching Rates Handbook.

Customers do not want their clothing soiled by the marks left on seats by shoes. Placing your feet on seats also limits the availability of those seats for other fare-paying customers.
It is an offence to place your feet upon a seat in a train carriage. Signs displayed in carriages advise passengers of the regulations. |
| |
Toxic, inflammable and/or hazardous materials are not permitted on stations or trains. For more information visit Please remember. |
| |
Responsibilities include such activities as giving up your seat for an adult, taking your rubbish with you, behaving safely at all times.
For a full list of your responsibilities, visit the Code of conduct page.
All students are to behave in a manner that ensures both their comfort and safety and that of other customers in order to retain their free school rail pass.
|
| |
Students travelling on a free student pass are required to give up their seats for fare-paying customers. This condition of usage is noted on the pass. Any student not complying with the terms of their pass may have it confiscated at any time.
For more information visit the Code of conduct page.
